Introduction by Bapsi Sidhwa

Humaira Abid’s creates carved wood sculptures, often incorporating elements of miniature painting and installation, examining the stigma that women feel over natural, social and cultural issues. The power and politics in women's lives are brought into focus through Abid's global lens as an artist working between the United States and Pakistan. By focusing on taboos and stereotypes that are rarely addressed in public, Abid aims to normalize them through dialogue and discussion. By exposing what lies beneath veils of secrecy, viewers can find resonance with their own lives. As the shame dissipates, the healing can begin. Taboo collects the recent work of Pakistani artist Humaira Abid, produced by a partnership between ArtXchange Gallery (Seattle, WA), Bellevue Arts Museum (Bellevue, WA), Twelve Gates Arts (Philadelphia, PA), and Khaas Gallery (Islamabad, Pakistan).
